Scientific Expertise for the Wisconsin Legislature

As Wisconsin faces increasingly complex and pressing scientific and technological issues, the Legislature must be equipped to access and synthesize credible, technical information as it deliberates policy options.
WI STEP is focused on strengthening the institutional capacity of Wisconsin’s nonpartisan legislative service agencies to provide the nonpartisan research and analysis to inform policymakers.

Scientific Expertise Carries a Civic Responsibility

Wisconsin has a long tradition of connecting research to public service, and WI STEP builds on that legacy by creating a pathway for scientists and engineers to serve state government. By embedding expertise within existing legislative institutions, the program aims to reinforce trusted processes and ensure that science remains a valued resource for policymakers on both sides of the aisle in Wisconsin.
